A former Victoria Police typist was charged with theft and fined $400 by the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court earlier today.
Danielle Miller was accused of stealing $7.95 worth of cheese and bacon from Greener’s Supermarket in Lonsdale on May 3, 2017, after the goods were allegedly found in her handbag.
Miller pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft.
Constable Nowak of Victoria Police told the court Miller denied stealing the items after being pulled aside by store security officer, Jamil Rao.
Mr Rao told the Magistrate he observed Miller placing the cheese and bacon in her handbag, and that she made no attempt to pay for the items when at the counter.
The accused was detained in the store manager’s office until police arrived on the scene, with Miller telling the Magistrate she was “surprised” to find the cheese and bacon in her possession.
Miller told the court she had suffered from “flash migraines” for approximately five years, and claims a blackout was the reason for the items appearing in her handbag.
The court was told by Miller this was her third flash migraine in the space of five years.
The Magistrate said she was “satisfied beyond reasonable doubt” that Miller was guilty of the charge.
Miller has been granted one month to pay the $400 fine, and has elected to not appeal the decision.
